blog post Tangled Star EP Featured Release and Review at DOA

Tangled Star's most recent EP, the gorgeous Our Man In Eden Hill has been selected as a featured release over at the excellent Delusions of Adequacy (DOA) music zine along with a glowing review.

"The band possesses the distinct knack of creating catchy pop songs that hit just the right elements to keep a listener tuned in for a long time. Their latest EP, Our Man in Eden Hill, is a fine reminder of the band’s ability to craft smart, affecting music.... A song like “The Skaters” is evenly balanced with a reflective piano and Hallsworth’s gentle vocals. It’s the kind of song that starts out pleasant enough but can touch your heart in many ways. The sounds recall some of Radiohead’s better chords and progressions (especially the ending) and the music ends up being one of the EP’s highlights because of it....Hallsworth’s voice is reminiscent of Stephen Malkmus but he carries his own distinct timber and when the music swells, so does his voice. He is able to reach high levels of emotion and intensity while still sounding in control... This is a quiet and serene listen, one that can touch people on different levels..." - Delusions of Adequacy

The EP is available now for digital download from the HSR Store (where it can also be previewed in full) as well as all good digital retailers. The EP will also see re-issue on CD with the next month so stay tuned for details.

There’s a bumper crop of Hidden Shoal reviews in this month’s edition of Norwegian e-zine Luna Kafe. Tangled Star's new single 'tosleepingpeople' as well as the new single by Glassacre, and albums by Sankt Otten and The Retail Sectors have all got the thumbs up, or “tommelfinger opp” if the free online English-Norwegian translator I’ve just found is correct…

About

Description
Distilling elements of indie rock and alt country married with Hallsworth’s wonderful dust and liquor coated vocals and twisting lyrics, Tangled Star's weave their own magic place.

Their second release through Hidden Shoal Recordings, Our Man in Eden Hill, sees Tangled Star building on their wonderfully received debut outing , It’s Now or Later. Musically the EP toys with the frayed edges of country, pop and indie, while in part infusing a sense of space and possibility familiar to fans of the classic Dark Side of the Moon.

As with their debut EP, Our Man in Eden Hill’s surface often belies its musical and emotional interior. Through its gentle shifts and directed detours, the EP manages to make once familiar territory foreign and offset. As chief songwriter and lyricist Craig Hallsworth explains,

“If these songs are simple, they are only apparently so. To me, they are only beginning to really work when they are able to express a space of becoming... There are strange warnings and advice, mysterious imperatives and entreaties... I see the lyrics as working for and against themselves, as well as for and against the music, generating a plane of momentary, shifting affective states. There is comic desperation folded into offhand profundity. There is something depressing and defeating suddenly transformed into a rare kind of pleasure and privilege. There are secrets with nothing to hide. There is one last chance after another…”

“In my opinion one of the most underrated West Australian songwriters of all time.” Dave Cutbush, Music Director, RTRFM.
